Aquatics

The Vincennes YMCA offers everything you need for that summer lifeguarding job. The YMCA is the only facility in Knox County that offers all four courses one needs to become a lifeguard—all under one roof. Those attending and passing the course prerequisites will be ready to lifeguard one day after the completion of the course. You must be able to attend all classes. Prerequisite testing is done the week before the training classes and includes performing a long shallow front dive then swimming 300 meters, including 100 yards front crawl, 100 yards breaststroke and 100 yards combination of front crawl and breaststroke without stopping; surface diving head first and feet first in 8 to 10 feet of water. You must attend the prerequisite testing to have a spot in the class, which is for members and non-members. There are two training dates: April 15-18 with the prerequisite testing on Thurs., April 8, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.; April 29-May 2 with prerequisite testing on Thurs., April 22, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. The training times are Thursdays, 6 to 10 p.m., Fridays, 5 to 10 p.m., Saturdays, 9 to 4:30 p.m. and Sundays 8 a.m. to 3 p..m. Participants need to attend all classes to complete the course and class size is limited, so register early. You can register at the Y front desk or for additional information contact Tiffany Petts, Aquatics Director, 895-9622, ext. 37.

Professional Rescuer CPR/AED (American Red Cross Certification)
A course designed to help people feel more confident of their ability to act appropriately in the event of an emergency. This is a good opportunity for home child care providers or daycare centers to keep their certifications up to date. A great class for nursing students, too. Adult, child, infant CPR, rescue breathing and more are covered in the class. The class is Sat., April 17, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., but you must register by the Thursday prior to the Saturday class. Registration can be made at the front desk.

12 Week TRYathlon Training Program
Sign up is underway for the 12 Week TRYathlon Training Program to help women prepare for the fourth annual SIS Women’s TRYathlon. The training program offers everything you need to complete the TRY—swimming biking and running, in addition to core and strength training. The class is for every fitness level and starts March 22 and ends June 12, the day before the TRY. The training is for Y members and non-members and classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays with an early session from 3:45 to 5:15 p.m. and Saturday, with times to be determined, and late sessions from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday from 8 to 10 a.m. You can register at the front desk for the training program or call Tiffany Petts, ext. 37, for more information.

TRYathlon Swimming Class
For those who feel comfortable with their running and cycling abilities, but struggle with the swimming portion of a triathlon, this swimming class is for you. The class will teach you how to swim better and faster while saving energy for the rest of the race. The class begins April 6 and runs until May 1, meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. and Saturdays, 7:15 to 8 a.m. You have the option of attending twice weekly sessions or attending three times weekly. The class is for members and non-members. Sign up at the front desk.

YMCA-JCPenney Roundup
On March 24 through April 6 area residents will have an opportunity to help the YMCA through their purchases at the Vincennes Plaza JCPenney story. During these dates shoppers at the Vincennes Plaza JCPenney can “round up” their purchases to the next whole dollar and the JCPenney Afterschool Fund will donate the difference to the Vincennes YMCA. The funds help children in the community to have access to the Ys afterschool programs. So shop JCPenney for all your new Easter and spring outfits and help the Y.

Project Safe Prom
For 15 years local emergency service providers and the YMCA have teamed up to demonstrate to the junior classes of area high schools the consequences of teenage drinking and driving, particularly on prom night. This year’s Project Safe Prom is slated for April 13 and the group is in desperate need of “prom clothing” for the event. If you have old prom dresses and/or tuxes, they could use your donations. The items need to be a true donation, not a loan, as the clothing cannot be returned. If you have items to donate to this worthwhile cause, please drop them off at the YMCA by April 5 or call Bill Davis, YMCA Teen and Family Director, at ext. 21, if you have questions.
