YMCA Programs: We build strong kids, strong families, strong communities.
YMCA Summer Day Camp
Can summer be far away when it is time to begin thinking about Day Camp? The YMCA offers a premier day camp program with convenience and professionalism that sets it apart. Camp counselors are selected for their maturity, skills, enthusiasm, experience and desire to be involved with children. All staff is CPR and First Aid certified, plus they receive professional training emphasizing safety, child development, teaching methods and group dynamics. YMCA Summer Day Camp gives kids an opportunity to grow personally by developing self-esteem and self-reliance, to learn and strengthen positive values, to become better leaders and to improve personal and family relationships by learning to communicate and cooperate with others. All this while having fun, fun and more fun. Day camp offers a new theme for each week. For each theme, new games and skills are introduced. Day campers take part in a wide variety of indoor and outdoor activities including arts and crafts, cook, celebrations, cook outs, field trips, theme games, court sports, character building, group initiatives, learning activities, performances and, of course, swimming.
“Green” themes will be prevalent again this summer with campers planting and harvesting a garden, learning about composting and how to grow organically. There will be guest demonstrations and many other activities designed to make campers good stewards of the environment. Take the worry out of childcare this summer by relying on YMCA Day Camp, knowing your children are in good hands. Summer camp begins June 1, Don’t wait until school’s out to begin thinking about summer child care, sign up early and rest assured your kids are in good hands. Make this summer a recreational adventure for your children with YMCA Day Camp.
Registration can be made at the front desk and financial assistance forms are also available at the front desk. If you need more information on Day Camp, contact Bill Davis, 895-9622, ext. 21.

Parents Night Out
Parents, don’t forget to take advantage of Parents Night Out this Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. Just drop the kids off at the Y and enjoy an evening on your own. Kids in kindergarten through 6th grades will have fun enjoying gymnastics, games, crafts, movies, snacks and more, while you enjoy having uninterrupted time to take in a movie, dinner out or work on your taxes.
Community Garden
Community garden plots, located next to YMCA, will be available for rental and spring planting beginning March 13—weather permitting. The Vincennes Community Garden Association offers the plots to area residents who would like to garden but don’t have the land. Applications for the plots will be available at the Vincennes Chamber of Commerce. The plots are also available to groups, organizations or churches who might want to cultivate for the less fortunate and pass the produce on to those in need or local food pantries. In addition to the Chamber and the YMCA, the VCGA garden project sponsors include Knox County Soil and Water Conservation District, Purdue University Cooperative Extension, Knox County Public Library and League of Women Voters. The group is also accepting donations of items that can be used at the site such as shovels, rakes, wheelbarrows or garden carts, seeds and compostable materials. Please call the YMCA, 896-9622, if you have items you would like to donate. |
