April Programs – Spring is Coming!
Would you like to grow your own food, but have limited space, time or money? This series of programs will give you plenty of methods, ideas and inspiration to show that you can do it, despite obstacles! All programs are open to the public and free of charge.
April 5: “Backyard Wildlife Habitat”
Troy Hinkle of the Knox County Soil and Water Conservation District will discuss how you can attract a variety of wildlife to your outdoor living space, simply by adding adequate food, water and shelter to a new or existing landscape. Provide a safe haven for wildlife, and attract beneficial animals to your edible garden, too!
April 6: “Easy Garden Building Projects” and “Recycling for the Garden”
Learn to easily build simple things for your garden, such as a compost bin, trellis, raised bed and “chicken tractor” from Chris Coffey’s presentation “Easy Garden Building Projects”. Chris will be followed by Cindy Jones (Knox County Solid Waste Management District Educator) and Terri King’s presentation “Recycling for the Garden”, where you will learn to accomplish a variety of garden tasks easily, and with little or no money, by recycling and using things you’d probably, otherwise, throw away.
April 19: “Organic Container Gardening”
If you have very little space (or even if you have lots of space), you will benefit from learning how to grow food in containers. Stacye Johnson, Purdue Extension Educator, will teach us everything we need to know, from selecting containers, soil and plants to taking care of the container garden so you can reap the rewards of fresh food. Who says you need a plot of ground to grow a garden?!
April 26: “Edible Gardening for Small Spaces”
The classic rectangle of land with rows of plants is not the only way to garden! Terri King, Grow Organic Educator, will show you many techniques to help you make better use of your outdoor spaces. You can then select techniques that work for you and the unique spaces you have. You will be surprised by the many ways you can grow food!
******************************
The April programs will all take place at 6:30 p.m. Eastern time in the Fortnightly Club building, 6th and Seminary Streets, Vincennes. Sign up by calling the Knox County Public Library at 812-886-4380 or stopping at the circulation desk. Watch for more programs starting in June!
